Kelly Penrod is an award-winning artist, who sees creativity as a primary factor in therapeutic and spiritual growth. She has given workshops on “Discovering Creativity through the use of Recycled Materials” at the Jung Center in Houston and the Art League in Lake Jackson.

Kelly believes creativity is the life blood of all people - each person is creative, yet many adults have been socialized to shut off their creativity.  She practices creativity by means of sculpture, drawing, digital, photography, fabric art, and any other means she may want to explore.

She sees creativity as one of the major ways people can heal from trauma, grief, and addiction.  As an alcohol and drug counselor, she uses creativity to help clients transform.
At her studio in Houston, Kelly teaches individuals and groups to use art to heal individually and grow community. She does this most often through the creation of whimsical sculptures made of materials that may have otherwise been thrown in the trash.   She does this to challenge the idea of "worth."  By creating something new and unexpected out of what many view as worthless, disposable materials, she hopes to help other people discover that despite where they have been, they have a place and a value.

Kelly began using recycled materials several years ago to avoid adding more garbage to the world.   She felt a much better use for many things could be to rework them into art.  Detergent bottles become the beginning form for sculptures, seed pods become bird feathers, and pumpkin stems become bird beaks.  Additionally this approach provides a low cost way for everyone to be able to participate in the creative process.  Use what you have and channel your voice through what is around you.  Perhaps Kelly’s most important influence is her four-year old granddaughter who teaches Kelly to stay alert to new details, as well as to the wonders of the world.
